Sunday Six: The Facebook Whatsapp Deal

Facebook Whatsapp DealToday morning, my dad showed an article about the Facebook Whatsapp deal and asked ‘Why haven’t you written something about it?’

And I was like, ‘Dad, everybody is writing about it, it will be better if I collate it and share some interesting articles with the audience’. See, multiple folks have dissected and dissected again and have written too many bytes about the acquisition. They have written all the good and bad about the deal and I had too little to add to it.

Personally, I only felt that it’s the data that they were interested in and nothing more. If you think they were behind the number of users, not really, because many of them are already on Facebook and those who are not, may or may not go. So, it would hardly make sense for Facebook to invest so big on something they are not too sure about.

These thoughts were echoed in some of the articles below. Sanjay Mehta and Mark Schaefer made no bones about it and have put all the reasons very aptly.

The other article from Neil Huges at Appleinsider gives an interesting story of even Google trying to acquire Whatsapp.

And gives us all the data points that would have been very important for Facebook in making up the proposal. 50bn messages per day could have been the deal-clincher for Whatsapp.

Jolie O’Dell at Venturebeat argues that it could be Facebook’s ticket to the next billion since it’s facing some growth problems now. I might not subscribe to that POV, since each platform is different and very few will make a jump across to Facebook. Other that just getting the total users added as Facebook users and creating a false impression for investors (well, investors are a smart tribe, they’ll read into such games).
